Through The Boulder-fields

Brunswick Street Gallery 2022

These paintings portray the physical and optical challenges of navigating The Lost World Track, located high on kunanyi(Mt Wellington, Hobart). The track is steep and challenging, with fallen car-sized dolerite boulders, which are covered in lichen. Occasional circular track-markers painted directly onto the boulders in red and yellow guide the way through. On this Track one is constantly shifting their eyes from down at one's feet (to prevent falling into the deep clefts between boulders) to up ahead; at the next looming boulder to be scaled and for the next faded track marker to be found. The paintings therefore seek to embody the walker's experience by conflating these two views, the ground and the vertical, into the one flat picture plane.
